I did read that trilogy when I was about 12 or 13. My memories of it have faded to almost nothing by now, sadly; must read it again. But I did read the first of Burroughs’ John Carter books not long ago, in a rare fit of novel-consumption (it was around the same time I read Lolita and Heart of Darkness). What I’m mostly thinking of here, though, is sci-fi comics from the 30s-50s – not least the mighty Eric Resetar, of course! And European comics from the late 60s to early 80s (the kind of stuff I used to pore over in Pilote and Metal Hurlant).
Dylan, have you ever seen Fellini’s film 8 1/2? I think you would find it very engaging — the themes and narrative digressions in the film have some parallels to the topics you are exploring in this strip. I am highly enjoying your work here — it’s entertaining me, but also making me think.
I saw 8 1/2 many many years ago, when I was still a kid. My dad taught film (he’s recently written a few books about Len Lye, among other things), so I grew up watching all kinds of things. Was a great education – and probably has a lot to do with the comics I do now.

One of your favourite books wouldn’t happen to be Out of the Silent Planet?

It’s coming! Sorry – this week was a write off, due to a heap of commissioned things. But next week, I promise!
