Two new things

Monday, November 19th, 2018

Presenting two new things that I have made, both of which are now available for purchase:

DARKEST DUNGEONS
Issue no. 1
(126mm x 71mm or 5″ x 2.8″)
24 pages, black & white with 2-colour covers
$10.00 (USD)
(includes shipping worldwide)

Two young women are unwittingly drawn into the thrilling, spiritually perilous world of fantasy role-playing. At the end of each issue, readers have the opportunity to vote on what will happen in the next instalment. The format serves as an homage to certain well-known cartoon religious tracts, frequently found in bus shelters or handed out on street corners.

…and…

WANDERING MONSTER
14 illustrated postcards

The perfect gift for the old school grognard in your life: a set of 14 full-colour postcards, drawn as a tribute to the 1st edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual (1977) and Fiend Folio (1981), all lovingly illustrated by Dylan Horrocks.

Faultlines (new Pickle mini-comic)

Wednesday, February 15th, 2017

I wrote and drew this new issue of the Pickle mini-comic in November and it was first distributed at the New Zealand Arts Foundation Art Awards (on account of they made me an Arts Laureate!!!). Now I’m making it available for public purchase. It’s a very personal response to earthquakes (geological and political), health dramas, moving to Wellington, and the faultlines in which we all live.

Anyway, if you want to buy it, or just to see a little more, go here.

Hicksville Original Art

I finally took the time to set up a shop, where you can buy original art from Hicksville. Quite a few pages have sold over the years, but many are still available, including some of my favourites.

Go take a look here.

I also updated the Buying Stuff page, which tells you how to buy everything from books to prints and t-shirts. Any purchases are, of course, hugely appreciated by me and my hungry family.

Original art for sale: Sam Zabel and the Magic Pen

Monday, January 25th, 2016

I have been reluctant to sell original art from Sam Zabel and the Magic Pen, but more than a year after the book’s release, I think it’s time to tentatively let a few pages go.

I may change my mind tomorrow and take them down. Or else raise the price. We’ll see.

But for now, the following are available for purchase for US$350 each (including postage).

Sam Zabel and the Magic Pen page 21:

Poor old Sam is late for a deadline And so, while his wife Sally sleeps alone, Sam sits staring at his computer screen, stuck on page 17 of his Lady Night script. Sam’s predicament here is uncomfortably familiar from my days writing scripts for DC Comics. As a consolation, I indulged myself with the decorated bedspread and curtains in panel 1. Drawing details like this – and slowly, meditatively shading – are among my favourite parts of the process.

(Japanese marker pen, ink & white-out on Fabriano paper)

Monster Manual sketch request redux!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2015

monster_manual

A couple of years ago I went on a bender taking commissions to draw monsters from the 1st edition AD&D Monster Manual and it was so much fun I’m giving it another go.

So here’s how it works:

1. Fill out the form below, telling me what monster you want me to draw.*
2. Click on the Paypal button and complete your purchase (price is US$80 + $5 postage).
3. Over the next week, I will draw your monster (in full colour!) and then post it to you.
4. It arrives at your house, where you put it in a beautiful gilt frame and hang it on your wall for friends, family, fellow gamers and potential future mates to admire and praise.
5. Many years later, you die alone and unloved, cursing with your last breath that hateful cartoonist whose horrible monster drawing destroyed all possibility of romance and happiness in your life.**

*As seen in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual.
**No responsibility taken for purchaser’s future happiness.

Note: the number of requests is limited.

Hicksville page 163:

Leonard walking to the Hogan’s Alley Day party, dressed as Captain Tomorrow. Highlights include: some clumsy drawing, lots of stars in the night sky (each one drawn with white-out and then touched up with ink), more white-out in panels 2 and 3 (where the drawing was even clumsier than usual), a general air of mystery.

Another page at half price, while I work at getting my online shop set up.

This one’s the original art for Hicksville page 115.

Sam is at Dick Burger’s birthday party, feeling awkward and out of place. I’m quite fond of this page. Some highlights include:

  • Cincinnati Walker’s first appearance (Cincinnati is one of my favourite characters. I’ve planned a whole story about her & Sam set a few years after Hicksville, which I hope to draw one day).
  • Stan Lee cameo in panel 1.
  • You can see where I fixed up a spelling mistake in Cincinnati’s name. Also where I had second thoughts and whited out a tattoo on her right shoulder.
  • OK, so if you want this page, hit the Paypal link below: (Sorry – someone bought it already)

These limited edition prints were made for the Treviso Comic Book Festival in Italy last year. The theme of the festival was “comics and sport” and New Zealand was the guest country (as reported at From Earth’s End and Pikitia Press). Hence the image of a saintly Silver Fern over Treviso.

They’re high quality Giclée prints on heavy German etching paper.
    Dimensions: A3 (297 x 420 mm, 11.7 x 16.5 inches).
    Shipped rolled in tube.
