“Te Kooti’s chains”: Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki (Rongowhakaata iwi, ?-1893) was a Maori prophet, religious leader and warrior who fought against the colonial government between 1868 and 1872. He founded the Ringatū religion in 1868 while exiled on the Chatham Islands. His dramatic escape, along with 168 prisoners, became the stuff of legend.
